What involvement have you had with competitions?: 

I have been a World Skills expert from 2003, a CE from 2007 and a UK Competitions organiser since 2005.

Who would you like to thank for their support?: 

I would like to thank Warwickshire College, L’Oreal, Red Edge, City of Bristol College and Brathay.

What made you take on this role?: 

I was asked to assist in the selection event for 2001 and subsequently took over the role in 2003.

Why do you think WorldSkills is important?: 

It showcases the talent of young people.

What do you enjoy most about your role?: 

The challenge of a new squad every cycle and how to improve on previous plans.

How has this year differed to WorldSkills Calgary 2009?: 

Being able to have a larger squad due to increased participation and awareness of National UK competitions which is the route to being a part of the squad.

How are you using this experience in your workplace?: 

We want more people to experience the world skills experience. My own students have been motivated to become involved.

What do you think being part of this process does for young people?: 

It opens many avenues for further specialist training and enables competitors to become highly sought after employees in the commercial industry. It also enables individuals to become role models for others.

What sets a WS competitor apart from your average young person?: 

Their commitment, enthusiasm, passion and to strive to go that one step further.

What would be your message to industry about entering future competitions?: 

Come and see how talented these people are in all aspects of our industry – could they do it?

What impact will WorldSkills London 2011 have on your industry?: 

To show the world talented people and that vocational training is just as important as academia can have a major effect on the economy. It will demonstrate how we train the best hairdressers and why people from all over the world come to the UK for training, employment and work experience.
