What involvement have you had with competitions?: 

I will be involved in WorldSkills London 2011 as a training manager for the first time.

Who would you like to thank for their support?: 

I would like to thank Forth Valley College of further and higher education – an employer who supported me in my continuous professional development through my working life.

What made you take on this role?: 

It would extend me as a coach trainer.

Why do you think WorldSkills is important?: 

It promotes excellence in skills.

What do you enjoy most about your role?: 

I enjoy working with competitors, their employers and supporting organisations.

How are you using this experience in your workplace?: 

I am promoting skills competitions as a method of improving competitor skill sets.

What do you think being part of this process does for young people?: 

It changes their outlook to work and self development.

What sets a WS competitor apart from your average young person?: 

They are aiming at being the best in their field.

What would be your message to industry about entering future competitions?: 

Look at the benefits of the training that will be given to their employee through the further training that the competitor will receive.

What impact will WorldSkills London 2011 have on your industry?: 

It will promote excellence in the industry.

What are your personal achievements: 
  • A Senior lecturer for Welding Fabrication and Manufacturing
  • Being a Ukskills training Manager and Worldskills Expert
  • Forming my own training company -  Global Training and Education Limited

I have been in further education and training for 35 years. I am also the chair of the association for welding, fabrication training and education.
