"I am very proud to be representing the UK in the refrigeration event at WorldSkills and think it will be a great opportunity for my career. In the future I hope that it will be my name that everybody in the industry has heard of and wants to work with."
Profile
Matthew's desire to work within the refrigeration industry came as a result of his work experience placement at high school:
"I was placed at Crowther & Shaw and really enjoyed it. I liked travelling to different parts of the country, meeting new people and being faced with different challenges. The following year I applied for an apprenticeship position and was accepted."
It was Matthew's boss who first brought skills competitions to his attention and he has found competing to be very rewarding:
"I learn something new about myself every time I compete. I have also found that the stress of competing has helped to build my character and it has made me a stronger person."
In preparation for WorldSkills Matthew will attend several training events where he will be working with refrigeration experts. In his spare time Matthew enjoys watching rugby league, go-carting and socialising with friends.
Employer
Crowther & Shaw, a third generation company based in Huddersfield, specialises in the installation and servicing of commercial and industrial refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.
