Team UK Announced for WorldSkills London 2011

The 43 members of Team UK that will take on the world’s most highly skilled students, apprentices and employees at WorldSkills London 2011 were named this evening (29 June) by Skills Minister John Hayes during the National Apprenticeship Awards.

The UK will compete in 37 skills ranging from Mobile Robotics, Electrical Installations and Graphic Design to Cooking, Hairdressing and Landscape Gardening.

WorldSkills London 2011, which takes place at ExCeL from 5-8 October 2011, will be the world’s largest international skills competition with young people from across the globe competing to be the ‘best of the best’.   At the competition, 1000 competitors from over 50 countries / regions will compete in 46 skill areas over four exciting days.   The event will also offer visitors impartial advice and guidance on careers and apprenticeships. 

Skills Minister John Hayes said:  "Those representing the UK at WorldSkills willplayahugely important role in bringing the value of vocational skills and practical learning to national attention. I offer my warm support and congratulations to every member of the team.

“To support the ambitions of young people everywhere in our country, we have created a record number of apprenticeships, and we are building the best skills training system we’ve ever had."

Puja Varsani, Team UK Member in Mobile Robotics said:  “It is a huge honour to have been selected to represent the UK at WorldSkills London 2011.  I hope this opportunity will allow me to showcase how vocational training can lead to successful employment and career opportunities.  I know the next few months will be tough as I will be in training for the event and I really hope the whole of the country gets behind Team UK for WorldSkills London 2011 like they do our sporting teams!”

The members of Team UK have been and will continue to be supported in their training by Edge, the independent education foundation, the Premier Supporter of Squad and Team UK and Brathay Trust, the Premier Training and Development Partner of Squad and Team UK.

WorldSkills London 2011

WorldSkills London 2011 will bring together 1,000 Competitors (under 25 years) from over 50 countries/regions to compete in 46 separate skills competitions. Around 150,000 people are expected to attend the event, which takes place at ExCeL London from 5- 8 October 2011. The world’s greatest skills Competition, WorldSkills London 2011 will see young people compete for medals in 46 categories from the following seven sectors:

  • Health, Public Services and Care
  • Agriculture, Horticulture and Animal Care
  • Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies
  • Construction, Planning and the Built Environment
  • Information and Communications Technology
  • Retail and Commercial Enterprise
  • Arts, Media and Publishing

The WorldSkills Competition takes place every two years and WorldSkills London 2011 will be the 41st Competition. The UK previously hosted the WorldSkills Competition in 1965 in Glasgow, and in 1989 in Birmingham. Every community and business in the UK thrives on skills, enterprise and inspiration and the WorldSkills London 2011 team is working to make sure that the Competition acts as a catalyst to spark the ambitions not just of Competitors but of people across the country. Visitors to the event will discover how skills shape our world, get the chance to Have a Go at a wide range of skills activities, and have an opportunity to talk to a range of experts about future career options and opportunities.
