WorldSkills UK Manufacturing Team Challenge, 2009, Silver medal winner.

Sam is competing for a place in Team UK as part of the BAE Systems team with Kai Burkitt and Rachael Carr.

What made you choose this career?: 

I have always been interested in engineering and how things work. I enjoy hands on work and challenges in my job.

How did you hear about competitions? : 

I heard about it from my assessor when he asked if I would like to take part. I wanted to get involved as it sounded like a good challenge and opportunity to test and further my skills.

What are your biggest personal achievements so far?: 

Getting a place on my apprenticeship and becoming ‘Machinist of the Year’ in my first year. I also have an England basketball coaching qualification.

What’s your ambition?: 

To work my way up the company ladder, gaining all the qualifications I can along the way. Hopefully working as a shift supervisor or within a managerial role.

What are you hoping for by competing for a place at WorldSkills London 2011? : 

A high level of training that will help me throughout my career. With commitment from myself and my trainers I would like to win a medal at WorldSkills.

What do your family and friends think about you competing?: 

My family are proud that I have worked hard to get to a position that gives me this opportunity and have supported me throughout. My friends are supportive of me and hope I do well.

What would you say to other young people considering a vocational career?: 

Definitely go for it. It provides a good level of training and can lead to many different career paths.
Take every opportunity that you are given to gain experience and knowledge as you never know what will come of it.

What do you think getting involved in international competitions could do for your career?: 

I hope it will help me progress through the company and get me recognised as a hard worker. It may lead to new career opportunities for me.

Something we didn’t know about you...: 

In my spare time I play basketball for Preston Pride and spend at least one day a week shooting or beating on a shoot when it is in season.
