What made you choose this career?:

The opportunity and development rates which could be achieved in this industry. In the Advanced Apprenticeship I found that it offered an excellent opportunity to hone my current ability and enhance my skill set to a very mature level.

How did you hear about competitions? :

The competition was first highlighted through my Training Manager, who sensed a massive opportunity and thus requested our application to the competition. This in turn highlighted the benefits and exposure obtained through competing in WorldSkills. It also signified a new chapter in my career, a new opportunity and the platform to enhance my current skill set to a very advanced maturity level.

What are your biggest personal achievements so far?:

A key achievement in my career so far was the manufacture and test of a new concept UAV (Demon). The Demon UAV was a key component in the Flaviir in which was to develop technologies for a maintenance free, low cost UAV without conventional control surfaces and without performance penalty over conventional craft.
I become a key member of the production team from from initial tooling and composite detail manufacture through to first flight. In this project I was responsible for developing the tooling philosophy to be used in a number of detail parts and assembly, Assisting in planning the assembly, ensuring all flight controls achieved the relevant steps and gaps and full range of movement when actuators were fitted and powered up. Strengthening undercarriage and undercarriage attachment structure to meet the demands established with the engineering team.
I was awarded the winner of the Composites UK Trainee/Apprentice of the Year Award 2009.

What’s your ambition?:

I would like to become a key contact in the research and development sector. I want to be at the forefront of technology, bringing these new modern concepts to the company. It is my passion to continue my climb up the hierarchy ladder, and eventually become a respected member of the board.

What are you hoping for by competing for a place at WorldSkills London 2011? :

I am hoping for the competition to highlight weak points of my current skill set, this will allow me to resolve such issues and therefore assist me in becoming a more rounded engineer. I am also hoping that the competition will enable me to increase my efficiency under extreme pressures. The competition will also provide me with the platform to reach my ambitious career deliverables and milestones.

What do your family and friends think about you competing?:

My family and friends are extremely inspired by my determination and commitment to my work, and believe that this will provide another massive opportunity in my drive to success.

What would you say to other young people considering a vocational career?:

Stay motivated and always aspire to succeed. The vocational career can offer a wide range of opportunities both practically and intellectually based.

What do you think getting involved in international competitions could do for your career?:

Getting involved will evidently provide massive exposure and will promote my career globally, providing a suitable platform for me to continue to develop and grow as an individual while maintaining strong relations with my team. Both aspects will encourage me to always better myself and set goals for my future aspirations.
